How cellulose nanofibrils and cellulose microparticles impact paper strength—A visualization approach

Cellulosic nanomaterials are in the focus of academia and industry to realize light-weight biobased materials with remarkable strength. While effect is well known, distribution these less explored, particularly for paper sheets. Here, we explore 3D micro nanosized cellulosic particles sheets correlate their extent fibrillation inside subsequently properties. To overcome challenges contrast between matrix, attached probes on cellulose nano/microparticles, either by covalent attachment fluorescent dyes or physical deposition cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. The increased enabled visualization matrix using multiphoton microscopy, X-ray microtomography SEM-EDX. results indicate that fibrillary fines enrich at pores fiber-fiber junctions, thereby increasing relative bonded area fibers enhance strength while CNF seems additionally form an inner network.
